WITH ONLY days until the Farnham Soapbox Race, the Herald visited another team to see the progress they have made.

The team at A Turner & Sons, Aldershot have been busy constructing their soapbox car in preparation for the big race on Sunday, August 18.

Paul Turner, manager at A Turner & Sons is working with friend Tom Howard for the race.

“I’m the passenger and Tom, a good friend of mine, is driving.

“He’s one of the top ten UK supercar bloggers. I’ve got a love of cars so we met through that.”

After attempts to enter the Red Bull Soapbox race “for the past two or three years”, the team were overjoyed when Farnham announced the town would be hosting one.

Paul told the Herald: “I saw this one come up and thought ‘right, okay’ – so as soon as the website said entries were open, I was there.”

Paul was previously featured on Dragon’s Den in 2012, securing a deal with Peter Jones.

Alf Turner Sausages are sold in local supermarkets and it was ‘The Headbanger’, made in collaboration with Iron Maiden’s beer brand Trooper, that served as the inspiration behind the car.

“We created a giant sausage and that is what we’ll be racing down the hill in,” he said.

“I’ll be screaming because Tom has a massive inability to drive or use breaks. I have been in a car with him before and, yeah, it’s pretty scary.”
