The Easter holidays are a great chance to spend some quality time with the family. And if you’re looking for something a little different this Easter, Gilbert White and The Oates Collection at Selborne could be just the thing for you.

From tomorrow (Saturday) until April 10 there is a family orienteering challenge offering the opportunity to plot your way around the centre’s new orienteering course. You can even make a race out of practising this skill. Bring your own compass or borrow one to help you find your way round the trail, with a small prize on completion.

This is a free, drop-in opportunity for people of all ages throughout the day.

Tuesdays during the school holidays are craft days at the museum, with an opportunity to celebrate great Victorian explorer Frank Oates, with African-themed crafts on March 29 and Central American crafts on April 5. These sessions are suitable for all ages, at no extra cost and with no need to book.

On Wednesday, March 30, the museum hosts a session ‘All About the Weather’. Find out where weather comes from, what it might mean and what it doesn’t, and build your own simple weather station to take readings at home.

And if you’re bored of Easter egg hunts, why not take part in the Great Gilbert White Bug Hunt on Wednesday, April 6. Join a group venturing out into the meadow and woodland to see what invertebrates are discovered and take a look at them through a microscope. Then make a bug hotel for the insects in your garden. Both activities are bookable and the cost is £6 per child, with the accompanying adult free, which includes all materials and refreshments.

Gilbert White’s House Museum will be open as normal throughout Easter, with cakes and treats in the Tea Parlour, flowers around the 25 acres of garden and parkland, as well as the wonderful stories of three great explorers of the natural world – pioneering 18th Century naturalist Gilbert White, Captain Lawrence Oates of the final Scott Antarctic expedition of 1911-1912, and Victorian explorer of Central America and Africa Frank Oates.
