The Met Office is warning Surrey and Hampshire motorists to be wary of lying snow and icy patches during Monday and into Tuesday morning.

A 'yellow' weather warning has been issued with temperatures again expected to dip below zero on Monday afternoon and overnight.

Icy patches are expected to form on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, resulting in "difficult" travel conditions, say forecasters.

The Met Office warning period is valid from 9am Monday to 11am Tuesday.

It comes after parts of Surrey and Hampshire received a light dusting of snow on Sunday evening, with heavier snow falls experienced in London and the east of the region.

National Highways advised road users not to travel unless absolutely essential as a result of this heavy snow fall in parts of the south east.

The strategic road network in Kent was particularly hard hit with snow severely impacting the M2, M20 around junctions 8 and 9, the A21 and A249 with drivers struggling to get through.

The resulting traffic prevented gritters, which are also fitted with snowploughs, from getting through in some areas.
