Pupils at a village school near Petersfield have become part of the IT crowd thanks to a handout from a county councillor.

Cllr Russell Oppenheimer recently gave The Friends of Sheet School a £1,000 grant to help with the cost of new laptops.

Every county councillor is given a pot each financial year to spend on groups and initiatives, with Cllr Oppenheimer dishing out 11 grants worth £8,000 in total within his Petersfield Hangers patch.

The grants ranged from £200 to HomeStart Butser for safeguarding training to £1,000 to help with floor refurbishment costs at King George V Memorial Hall in Froxfield.

He also gave £1,000 to Froxfield & Privett Parish Council for verge cutting, and the same sum to the Petersfield Community Land Trust to help with a self and custom build.

The Petersfield Shakespeare Festival, Musical Festival and Youth Theatre also received funds to help towards event costs, while further money was given to Ropley Parish Council, the Steep Film Society and Steep & Stroud newsletter.

The handouts for the latter three organisations will respectively help with footpath maintenance, installation of an induction loop and PA system, and keeping the parish newsletter running.

He said: “I am in the habit of publishing my grants list for the year once it’s closed for the sake of transparency, and I always make efforts to spread the grants around the Petersfield Hangers Division.

“The new grant round for the next financial year opens in June and I am always happy to discuss potential applications.”
