students from Liphook and the neighbouring villages, helped boost Alton College’s outstanding results achieved this summer with a 100 per cent pass rate across 28 A-level courses from 1,400 entries, yet again exceeding the national averages for sixth form colleges.

Three quarters of A level students were awarded A*-C grades, a quarter achieved A* and A, while 100 per cent of those taking the extended project qualification achieved A*-C, with 66 per cent achieving A*-A grades.

More than 70 per cent of vocational students achieved the highest grades of distinction* across more than 40 BTEC and Cambridge Technical courses.

Results in traditional A-level subjects such as English, maths, modern foreign languages, history, geography and other STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) alongside performing and creative arts, were particularly notable for success.

An impressive 97 per cent of students passed ‘double maths’ – A-level maths and further maths – and nearly half of the vocational engineering students achieved the top grades of three distinction*.

Three quarters of performing arts students also achieved the top grades.

Former Bohunt School student Amy Bleakley, achieved A* in geography and A* in the extended project qualification as well as an A in English Language and Spanish. She leaves the college to study physical geography at London University’s Royal Holloway College.

Amy was awarded the prestigious scholarship – the Steve Millar Award for Excellence in geography earlier this year.

She said: “I’m delighted with my results and have thoroughly enjoyed studying at Alton College.

“The teachers have been so supportive. It was an honour to be awarded the scholarship and I have used the money to buy books and to fund trips to prepare for university.”

Alton College principal Sara Russell told The Herald: “‘Our students are amazing and each year I’m so impressed and proud of their outstanding achievements.

“I’d like to offer huge congratulations to our students this year.

“Yet again thanks to their dedication and efforts and the unique support and high quality teaching from our expert staff, the college has exceeded national averages and achieved yet another set of outstanding results.”

Simon Williams headmaster of the independent Churcher’s College, in Petersfield, told The Herald: “Students achieved over 20 per cent of all the exams graded at the exceptional A* level, making it 90 per cent or above, as well as over half at A and A* grade.

“With over 80 per cent of the exams achieving an A* to B grades, all our previous academic records are tumbling.

“Add to that a quite exceptional year in respect to Oxbridge applications with eight achieving their offers, they are off to Oxford or Cambridge to read modern languages, chemistry, computer science, maths or engineering as well as five medics and two vets to add to the equation.”

Lawrence Hollom has received A* grades in his A-levels after representing the United Kingdom in international maths competitions in Hong Kong and Russia, that saw the UK team of the six best mathematicians in the country coming seventh out of 109 countries in the world.

Joining him with A* grades in their A-levels are: Cassie Shorten, James Hargreaves, Joe Hun, Seb Dows-Miller, Vanessa Pearson, Matt Waters, Rosa Parks and Joe Blackmore.

Mr Williams added: “Although we couldn’t be happier with the overall school results it is the individual achievements of the A-level students which allow them to move on to the most prestigious universities and courses in the country and everything suggests entry to first choice universities among this year’s A-level students at Churcher’s will be remarkably strong as well.

“Students at Churcher’s are ambitious for their future and the fantastic A-level results are the keys to unlock the doors to those top universities and futures.”
