GRAYSWOOD Nursery teamed up with Haslemere’s Haslewey Centre to make Christmas extra special for residents in the town and surrounding villages receiving the Community Meals Service.
Waverley Borough Council took over the old Meals on Wheels service in January and relaunched it as the Community Meals Service to continue supporting some of its most vulnerable residents.
For many, the CMS volunteer drivers are their only visitors during the day.
Haslewey is one of three centres across the borough operating the service, and meals are prepared from fresh ingredients every day by its in-house chef Mark Montgomery.
Under the Meals on Wheels system, frozen meals were delivered to centres to be heated up and delivered.
The new-style freshly cooked meals have gone down very well and numbers using the service have increased.
Manager Kerry Morren-Jeffs said: “All the team at Haslewey were touched to be approached by Grayswood Nursery to see how they could support the service in some way.
“Together with the fundraising team we have raised enough to give each recipient a complimentary Christmas lunch, small, handmade gift and cards made by the children.
“The nursery feels it is important for the children to begin to understand the needs of other people as well as themselves.
“Each term it selects a charity to receive 10 per cent of the money it raises and this term the nursery decided to support Christmas lunches for those who receive community meals.”
