LIPHOOK Day Centre was saying a fond farewell to one of its most dedicated long-time volunteers, when chairman Bob Hall handed over the reins to Paul Robinson during an emotional ceremony.
“After 13 years as volunteer, five years on the committee of the Peak Centre, three years as its vice-chairman and five years as chairman, I have decided to stand down,” he said.
"I will remain as trustee and would like to thank current managers Penny Leigh and Karen Hanney, all the other trustees, staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication, as well as the committee who plays a big part in fundraising for the day centre.”
East Hampshire District Council leader Ferris Cowper sent a letter congratulating Mr Hall and his wife Anne on everything they have achieved.
“The Peak Centre Trust is a wonderful exemplar of how to deliver a high quality service direct to our senior citizens,” he declared.
"It gets on with the job, which is why I have always been happy to grant taxpayer’s funds to the Trust. I can rely on the money being used optimally.
“Much of this success can be attributed to Bob and Anne Hall. All successful communities need intensely dedicated volunteers and that phrase defines Bob and Anne. Among many other personal attributes is the lovely way they have persuaded me to part with grant funds and yet make me feel that I am the one benefitting!
“This combination of geniality and dedication, together with their focus on where the need really exists, has made them famous stalwarts of the village community as well as architects of the success of the Trust.”
The day centre has seen several changes over the last year, with the retirement of treasurer David Lush after 23 years, who has now taken on the role as president and Janet Werner taking over as secretary.
Due to the fundraising committee, the local community, grants and support from families of clients, the day centre has managed to break even over the last few years and this year it even boasts a healthy profit.
With a register of 32 clients in total, spread over three days of the week, the centre has been able to open up the facility to a wider number of people, significantly reducing the waiting list and widen the support on offer.
The imminent arrival of the minibus, secured with the help of Age Concern Liphook, will be a welcome addition to transport clients.
The day centre has also benefitted from a facelift, with new double glazed windows, curtains, a range of new chairs and lighting, making it warmer and more welcoming.
Daily activities include board games, bingo, quizzes, ball games, indoor curling and knitting, as well as a weekly sing-along, while themed parties and activities take place on a regular basis, keeping clients, staff and volunteers busy. For more information call 01428 724941.
