Sir – Re: 'Garden waste charges far too high' – "We are keen to see the service pay for itself as much as possible to reduce the financial impact on those that do not use it". So says Richard Millard EHDC, Portfolio Holder for Business. This was in response to the complaint of Mr Benjamin, Bordon Herald (February 20) about the hike in cost of the garden waste collection service.

I use two such bags which cost £43 to service and agree that the charges are too high. In paying community tax we pay for all other EHDC services but not everyone uses them at the same level and some not at all.

Consider the huge cost of welfare or the library, for example, there's no rebate here for non-users so I fail to see Mr Millard's logic. Other re-cycling materials are collected free from surcharge so why not include garden waste and remove the chance of fly tipping in one go?

If the cost continues to escalate in this fashion the system will surely collapse.
