Haslemere residents are being urged to confront the stark realities of the climate and nature crisis as a new film examining its potential impact on Britain comes to the town.

Transition Town Haslemere and the Catholic Church Haslemere are joining forces to host a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall on Saturday, September 19, at 3pm.

Greg Stafford MP, West Surrey, Haslemere town councillors and members of the wider community have been invited to attend the event, which will be followed by a facilitated discussion about the issues raised in the film.

The screening forms part of a growing programme of events taking place across the UK, aimed at helping communities understand the risks posed by climate and nature breakdown and what they could mean locally.

The People’s Emergency Briefing was launched nationally in April after being adapted from a major briefing held at Westminster Central Hall in November 2025.

More than 1,200 MPs, peers and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media attended the original event, which was opened by broadcaster Chris Packham.

Leading experts examined how climate and nature breakdown could affect areas including food security, health, national security, infrastructure and the economy.

The briefing also explored practical measures that could help reduce the risks.

The resulting film has been designed specifically for community screenings in venues including churches, village halls, cinemas, schools and libraries.

Organisers say the aim is to make important information about the crisis accessible to people across the country while creating an opportunity for communities to discuss what it means for them.

Audrey Podmore, from Haslemere Catholic Church, said residents would be welcome to come along to watch the film and take part in the discussion afterwards.
