Three years after the last Haslemere Classic Car Show on Lion Green, the event returned in spectacular style on Sunday.

The Haslemere community stepped up to support the 12th running of the popular show in many ways – by displaying their adored classics, setting up stalls and helping out on the day.

First thing on Sunday morning nearly 100 cars gathered for a drive before the show. Vehicles ranged from a 1927 Ford Model T to a 1980 Talbot Sunbeam Ti Rally Car.

After a bacon butty the entrants went through Liphook, Hill Brow, Rogate, Harting, Midhurst, Selham and Petworth, before a coffee stop at the Stag Inn at Balls Cross.

The return trip through Kirdford, Wisborough Green, Dunsfold, Chiddingfold and Brook brought them back to Haslemere.

Lion Green was transformed into a traditional village fete, surrounded by stalls. Haslewey produced teas and music was provided by the Coastline Jazz Band. Lion Green was soon full with an array of classics on display for all to admire.

Visitors could vote for the car they would like to take home in the People’s Choice competition. Joint runners-up were Jenny Smart in her 1961 Commer Cob van and Roy Hunt in his 1959 Skyliner Hardtop.

The winner was Jean Digby-Smith with her Classic Citroen DS from 1972.

The Best Dressed Car and Crew saw prizes of hampers from red.h given to the 1960 Borgward Isabella Combi owned by Iain Bell and the MG VA prototype owned by Ian Burton.

The classic car show is organised by James Ewing – a Haslemere-based classic car restorer – helped by his partner Jane Puttock.

James said: “It has been a lot of work to get here but worth it when we see so many of the community enjoying a great day out. There really is something for everyone to enjoy.”

Haslemere mayor Cllr Jacquie Keen said: “I would like to thank and congratulate James, Jane and her team of volunteers for their hard work in putting together this family event, showing off these wonderful old cars. Many of us recollect that in our younger days we owned and drove some of these cars, bringing back many memories.

“Judging was difficult as many of the owners had taken the time and trouble to dress up themselves as well as the car.”
