CANON Andrew White has returned to Baghdad, after a brief trip to the United States.

Speaking on Sky News on Tuesday evening, he stated Islamic State militants were only a mile away from the capital and reported clashes with Iraqi soldiers.

"It has been another intense day but one of glory", he said. "It has also been another day of non-stop radio and TV interviews for me. IS has been better controlled today – the Iraqis have taken back several areas they had lost control of."

After his return to St George's Church in the Iraqi capital where he has been based for most of the past decade, Canon White reported: "People have been very fearful, the nation looks as if it has collapsed."
