LIPHOOK in Bloom and The Royal Anchor pub have been working together to ensure there is a Christmas tree in Liphook Square this year.

Gardening group stalwart Paul Johnson provided the 25ft tall pine from his own garden, which was delivered and erected by Glendale services, who also donated the large tub it now sits in.

Paul told The Herald: “The tree was our old family Christmas tree, which I planted in the garden 15 years ago and which has now grown this tall. It started life as a seed over 50 years ago when my father originally planted the tree.

“Glendale offered their services free of charge, which we really appreciate and Liphook In Bloom donated the lights, which will stay on the tree until after Christmas.

“We all felt The Square needed cheering up for the festive season, after the horse chestnut had to be felled back in October, and we worked together with The Royal Anchor on getting health and safety checks, as well as insurance cover sorted out, before next week’s annual carol singing event.”

Paul’s father Arthur was known as “Mr Liphook” and he has now taken over the unofficial title for his tireless work for the community behind the scenes.

Royal Anchor manager Sam Lavender said: “We are still in discussions with the parish council as to what can be produced to commemorate the horse chestnut tree and will work through the proposals with them in the new year.

“In the meantime, we are fully behind Liphook In Bloom putting up a Christmas tree in our grounds over the festive period.”
