THANKS to a joint initiative by Alton Local Food Initiative and Energy Alton, the audience at Alton Maltings enjoyed a viewing of ‘Project Wild Thing’, a film from the Wild Network supported by national nature organisations, showing how much children benefit from playing outdoors.

The weight of evidence was impressive – better mental health, increased confidence, less disruptive behaviour, and a greater sense of caring for our precious natural environment.

Audience member Emily Torr, 12, told the meeting: “You go out and think, ‘what shall I do for 10 minutes?’ And then you find lots of things to do and stay out longer.”

The film’s director had interviewed parents and children. One of the most telling answers from the children was in response to “what’s given you the greatest pleasure?”. They all replied: “Being with my family and doing fun things outdoors.”

In the discussion after the film, the audience quickly came up with ideas to spread the word about the value of nature – show the film in schools, create an exhibition in the library, encourage friends to volunteer as Cub and Scout leaders, promote the Forest Schools movement, and highlight the evidence of the benefits.
