The family of an Alton boy with a muscle-wasting condition has launched an event to fund treatment and research.

Oliver de Laszlo said: “Ten years ago our youngest son Sammy, 13, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Life expectancy is around 35.”

The 4.7 Super Sonic Challenge, planned for next August, will aid Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Super Sammy Family Fund.

It is a sponsored walk, run, jog, cycle or swim over 4.7 or 47 miles – 47 is the number of exons missing from Sonic the Hedgehog fan Sammy’s genetic code.

Oliver added: “He wants to take part in his power chair. His determination shines through.”
