PUZZLED drivers were held up by a flock of sheep in Paper Mill Lane, Alton, on Wednesday morning after a livestock trailer overturned.

Several sheep were reportedly killed and others badly injured in the incident, which took place at around 11am on September 25 opposite the junction with Dicker’s Lane, near Alton Station.

The Herald understands two police officers and a vet attended, while an eyewitness Andy Stonebridge captured the scene on video as dozens of sheep poured out of the stricken trailer.

Andy also shared with the Herald photographs of the horrific scene inside the trailer, showing several injured animals trapped inside the twisted wreck.

The driver of a tractor towing the trailer escaped unhurt.

One onlooker, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Herald: "Cedars vets in Alton attended the scene promptly as there were several badly injured animals that presumably were beyond saving.

"The farmer should consider himself fortunate that the container didn’t fall off in the town."

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "We were called at 10.18am following reports of a single vehicle incident involving a vehicle transporting sheep in Paper Mill Lane.

"This was a damage only incident. No reports of any injuries. No further police involvement at this time."
